Quatre Épices: Warm, peppery and full-bodied. It is produced with an alchemy of four spices; allspice, clove, cinnamon and nutmeg. Some versions might have black pepper instead of allspice. However, the allspice gives it a more rounded, sweeter flavour. It is said that this spice blend was introduced by pirates to the port of St.Malo in France during the 17th century. This is a super multipurpose blend. You could try it in a spiced espresso martini or to flavour certain coffee varieties. It pairs beautifully with chicken liver parfait or in a high protein rabbit terrine. Desserts such as a banana loaf or French apple tart are elevated by this warming spice mix. You could even have a sprinkling with your porridge in the mornings with some grated apple and runny honey.
