Recycling Help

Put down those jars and lids, and step away from the rubbish bin — those beautiful amber jars can be reused or recycled. At Camelēr Spice Cº, we’re doing our best to reduce waste, and we appreciate you learning the facts and benefits of recycling. However, we appreciate that many of you will already know the benefits and practices of recycling. We would also encourage you to recycle or reuse the beautiful blooming cardboard box and the hay filler that your jars came with.

It is fair to say that depending on where you live in the United Kingdom their appears to be a disparity between how people recycle because of their respective councils and boroughs.

Camelēr Spice Cº are not here to be on a soapbox. We just want to offer some direction.

To build a sustainable future we can all play a role. Both glass and aluminium have many lives. In fact, they can be infinitely recycled. It takes less energy to recycle than it does to manufacture from prime materials.

Just remember recycling is easy — we’ve listed a few options below.

Glass facts and benefits

  • Glass does not interact with food or drink.  It will fully preserve taste and vitamins.
  • Good for the environment. Easily recycled and recyclable.
  • Recycling a couple of glass jars uses the same amount of energy to boil 5 cups of tea.
  • On average, each UK household uses 500 glass jars per household every year.
  • Try and remove the labels before recycling although this is not critical.
  • Equally important, recycling glass, reduces the need to quarry from our landscapes.
  • There have been drastic changes in attitudes towards recycling since 2001. This has meant that the UK could have launched 5 space shuttle missions because of the increase of recycling and the resulting energy savings.

      Aluminium facts and benefits

      • The chemical symbol for aluminium is Ai with the atomic number 13. Demonstrated as Ai13 on the periodic table.
      • 75% of all aluminium produced is still in use today. It takes up to 95% less energy to recycle than to produce the primary aluminium. Just recycling a little aluminium lid can play a significant role in having better attitudes towards our planet.
      • When aluminium is exposed to air, a thin layer of oxide is formed which prevents corrosion.
      • Recycling just one aluminium can, would power a television for 3 hours.
      • Try and remove the label from the aluminium lid closures before recycling.
      • Aluminium reflects light and heat, making it an ideal material for food preservation.
      • Once our aluminium lids are recycled, they can be reproduced an aluminium lid in as little as 6 weeks. We call this a closed loop process.
      • At present the little white disc under the lid (EPE foam liner) is NOT recyclable. We are constantly looking at new technology and suppliers who can source recyclable liners. These are a necessity, to seal our product.

          Cardboard facts and benefits

          • Invented in England in 1871 you can reuse cardboard for storage or to repackage another product to ship, repurpose as a birdfeeder on your balcony or simply recycle.
          • The UK is considered one of the globes highest users of cardboard with global use set to increase 4% over the next five years.
          • For every tonne of recycled cardboard or paper, we are saving 17 trees, 1700 litres of oil, approximately 3 cubic meters of landfill space, 4000KW of energy and 30,000 litres of water.
          • Always remember to flatten your cardboard when you do decide to recycle so that you save space and always try and keep it dry.

              Hay infill facts and benefits

              • It takes about 7 days to bale hay from cutting, to turning, drying and baling.
              • Hay is affectively dried grass, making it a great infill. Furthermore, it reduces on the use of paper.
              • We would NOT suggest using the hay infill for any pet animals, but you can easily pop it in the compost bin or even use it as a natural igniter for the barbeque, or if you’re super creative, make a little nesting box for birds and insects with our blooming box and use the hay for bedding and nesting.

We aim to enrol to 1% For The Planet, an initiative dedicated to give 1% of gross sales each year, in aid of environmental charities. We are also looking at options where we will make a donation to a charity when you return the empty jars and lids after use. Please watch this space. For more information on our recycling policies please feel free to contact us or email us at wecare@camelerspiceco.com.
